Healthcare, legal, financial, and home services — what you need and how it works in Mallorca.
Healthcare
Public Healthcare (SNS / IB-SALUT)
Once registered on the Padrón and with a TIE/NIE, EU residents can access the public health system (Servei de Salut de les Illes Balears). You'll be assigned a GP at your local CAP. Waiting times for specialists can be long — private health insurance is worth considering alongside.
Register at your nearest CAP with your Padrón certificate and NIE. The public system is good for urgent care and GP visits.
Private Health Insurance
Private insurance gives faster specialist access, English-speaking doctors, and private hospitals. Main providers: Sanitas, Adeslas, Asisa, and DKV. Plans from ~€50–€120/month depending on age and coverage. Many expats run both public and private.
Sanitas and Adeslas have the widest English-speaking networks in Palma.
Clínicas & Private Hospitals
Palma has several private hospitals: Clínica Rotger, Clínica Juaneda, and the Policlínica Miramar are the main ones. All are modern and well-staffed. Outside Palma, private clinics exist in Pollença, Manacor, and Inca for routine consultations.
In a genuine emergency, the public Hospital Son Espases (Palma) is the island's main trauma centre.
Dentists
Dentistry is not covered by the public system for adults (basic exceptions apply). Private dentists are widespread. Prices are lower than northern Europe — expect €50–€80 for a consultation, €400–€700 for a crown. Many clinics in Palma and resort towns have English-speaking staff.
Ask expat groups for recommendations — quality varies and word-of-mouth is reliable here.
Mental Health & Therapy
English-speaking therapists and psychologists are available in Palma. The expat community is large enough to support several English-language practices. Online therapy (BetterHelp, Talkspace) works well if you're outside Palma. The public system has limited mental health capacity.

Legal
Gestors
A gestor handles day-to-day admin that would otherwise require a lawyer: NIE applications, tax filings, residency renewals, vehicle registration, and more. Costs €50–€150/month for ongoing service. One of the best investments you can make on arrival.
A good English-speaking gestor will save you dozens of hours of frustrating admin.
Lawyers (Abogados)
Needed for property purchases, rental disputes, employment contracts, inheritance, and company formation. Mallorca has many law firms experienced with foreign clients. Always use a registered abogado (member of the Colegio de Abogados de las Islas Baleares) for property transactions.
For property: never skip an independent lawyer — even if the agent offers to 'sort it all'. Legal fees are typically 1–1.5% of the property value.
NIE & Residency Specialists
Some gestors and law firms specialise specifically in NIE applications, residency applications (TIE), and non-lucrative visas for non-EU nationals. Particularly useful post-Brexit for British residents navigating the new requirements.
If you're a non-EU national, consider paying a specialist — the process has many points of failure.
Notaries (Notarios)
A notary must be present for all property purchases, company formations, and certain official documents. Fees are state-regulated. You don't 'choose' a notary the way you choose a lawyer — any notary can act. Your gestor or lawyer will typically arrange this.

Finance
Spanish Banks
A Spanish bank account is near-essential for rental payments, utilities, and direct debits. Main options: CaixaBank (widest ATM network), Sabadell (expat-friendly), Bankinter, and BBVA. Most require an in-person visit with your NIE and passport to open an account.
CaixaBank's 'Cuenta Nómina' is popular with residents; Sabadell has English-speaking staff in Palma.
Tax Advisors (Asesores Fiscales)
Spain's tax system is complex, especially if you have income from multiple countries, are self-employed (autónomo), or have assets abroad. An asesor fiscal will handle your annual Renta (income tax) and any quarterly filings. Fees from €150–€500/year depending on complexity.
If you have assets over €50,000 outside Spain you must file Modelo 720. Non-disclosure penalties are severe.
Currency Transfer
If you're transferring significant funds to Spain — for a property purchase or moving savings — specialist currency brokers (Wise, Currencies Direct, Moneycorp) beat bank exchange rates significantly. For a €300,000 transfer, the difference can be €3,000–€6,000.
Never use your bank's default exchange rate for large transfers. Always compare at least two specialists.
Financial Advisors (IFAs)
Expat IFAs help with pension planning, offshore bonds, and tax-efficient investment structures for residents in Spain. Look for advisors registered with the CNMV (Spain) or dual-regulated with the FCA (UK). Several Mallorca-based firms serve the British and Northern European expat market.

Moving
International Removal Companies
Several companies specialise in UK-to-Spain and Northern Europe-to-Spain moves. Costs vary enormously by volume and origin. A full household from the UK typically costs £3,000–£8,000. Always get 3 quotes. Check membership of FIDI or BAR for reliability.
Shipping by sea takes 3–5 weeks from the UK. Air freight is faster but expensive — only worthwhile for small, urgent shipments.
Vehicle Import
Importing a non-Spanish-registered vehicle requires paying import duties, getting an ITV (Spanish MOT), and re-registering with Spanish plates. The process takes 4–8 weeks and costs €500–€2,000 in fees and taxes. Many expats sell their car before moving and buy locally.
Left-hand-drive vehicles imported from the UK require a headlight conversion before the ITV test.
Pet Transport
Pets entering Spain from the EU need a microchip, rabies vaccination, and an EU pet passport. From non-EU countries (including post-Brexit UK), additional health certificates are required, and timing is critical — the certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel.

Cleaners (Limpieza)
Domestic cleaners are widely available and affordable — expect €10–€15/hour. Many work through word of mouth or local expat groups. If hiring regularly, technically they should be registered with Social Security (pay a modest monthly quota). Ask your gestor for guidance.
The Palma expat Facebook groups have reliable recommendations and vetted cleaners.
Builders & Tradespeople
Quality tradespeople (electricians, plumbers, builders) are in high demand and can have long waiting lists. Always get 3 quotes and check they are autonomos or have a registered company. For any structural work, ensure they hold the correct licences (licencia de obras from the Ajuntament).
Cash-only builders operating without receipts offer you zero recourse if something goes wrong. Insist on official invoices.
Internet & TV Installation
Movistar and Orange technicians typically install within 5–10 working days of signing a contract. If the building isn't already fibred, wait times can stretch. Satellite TV (for British channels) is still used by some — but most expats now use IPTV services or streaming.
Pool & Garden Maintenance
If you have or rent a property with a pool or garden, maintenance companies are common. Pool cleaning runs €80–€150/month depending on size. Garden maintenance is priced per visit. Many companies offer combined packages and will handle chemical delivery.
